Leave me your comments in the individual galleries or email me <A href="mailto:davidw@hvc.rr.com">here</A> A little background info: In November of 2002, my now ex-wife, Gina, gave me a fabulous digital camera for my birthday. It is since then that I've begun to pay attention more to the composition and technique in photography. I am a beginner. One of the most wonderful aspects of using a digital camera, to me, is the ability to view images instantaneously in order to make adjustments. When I used to depend on film cameras, and had to make sure I used up the film before sending it in for processing, I would sometimes take months or years to see my images. The immediacy of the digital format makes it much more likely for me to actually take pictures at all. The fact that i can process them and share them through the computer closes the deal. I spend as much time in the woods as my work and family schedule allows. Throughout my life I have always absorbed spiritual energy from water, trees and the beauty of organic shapes. In the last few years I've developed a fascination with mycology (study of mushrooms) stemming from my lifelong activities in foraging wild edibles. Mushrooms, I find, make wonderful subjects for photographs. They stay still, they come in an enormous variety of sizes shapes and colors and some of them taste really really good. At times they appear extraterrestrial. My intense interest in mushrooms brought me quickly into the world of macro photography. Frequently the camera actually allows me to see details which i normally wouldn't be able to see with the naked eye. All of the photographs of fungi in this gallery were taken with my Sony DSC-707 with the standard included Zeiss lens. Currently I have no add-on macro lens. I've been pretty pleased with the macro range of this camera. In 2003 I won Judge's Option Award in the <A href="http://www.namyco.org/">North American Mycological Association</A>'s Photo Contest with a photo which they dubbed, affectionately, <A href="http://fiddlehead.smugmug.com/gallery/8209/5/2348286">Slime Bear</A> Since then, I have put more focus on my photography and have entered the contest numerous times. The results can be seen in the <A href="http://fiddlehead.smugmug.com/gallery/173149">Awards Winners</A>Gallery. On a more biographical note, I grew up in the apple orchards of Harvard, Massachusetts and the woods of Vermont, mainly, with some time in The San Francisco Bay Area, Ohio, Virginia and Europe. I did my undergraduate studies in Music Composition at Oberlin and more recently earned a degree in Culinary Arts from New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. I live in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York, where I work as a chef. I am also a retired president of the <A href="http://www.mushroomthejournal.com/mhma/">Mid Hudson Mycological Association</A> .
